And usually, there's some back story to the gift that you tell as they open it... It just makes sense to spend time appreciating a gift with the person that got it for you..

Neither of us are Chinese nor do we practice the Chinese culture... I've always had people open my gifts in front of me.

She said it's the thought that counts... Yes, but... I spent time getting those little things together and feel that it's appropriate to spend time looking through the gifts a person spent time finding for you... She had time to eat cake and etc.
